The polygraph is very accurate. Over 250 studies have been conducted during the last twenty five years on the accuracy of the polygraph examination; these can be obtained through the American Polygraph Association, which gives an estimated accuracy rate range of 90 - 95%. Recent research shows that the accuracy of computerised polygraph testing is about 98%.
The polygraph instrument is a scientific, diagnostic instrument which is often called the "lie detector". It would be more appropriate, however, to call it the truth verification instrument.
A polygraph examination takes between 2.5 and 3 hours. The process consists of three phases:
1. A pre-test interview phase
2. The Polygraph Test phase
3. The post-test interview phase
It is quite normal for a person to feel nervous and the examiner is aware of this. Prior to the examination the polygraph is set to the sensitivity of the examinee.
You will be informed of the exact wording of each question that will be asked during the course of the polygraph examination. There will be no trick or surprise questions.
Every polygraph examination is carried out with the consent of the examinee. Examinees are free to leave at any time particularly if they feel the examiner has not been honest with them.

Yes they can, we advise that any examinee does not take any medicines within 24 hours of the examination unless they are prescribed by a doctor. We have a computerised medical information system that can advise us of the effects of medicines and drugs.
No. Firstly, the examiner has to be happy that the examinee is mentally and physically fit to take the test. Secondly, the examiner will monitor the behaviour of the examinee during the whole polygraph test looking specifically for the use of counter-measures. If any are found then the test is classified as “Purposefully none compliant“ which effectively is a failure.
